Thanks for the information letter Matt. We live right opposite this area and heard rumours that a 'pond' was going to be put in. We see first hand the amount of use this small piece of green-space gets, and feel it would be a shame to lose it. Obviously we need to wait and see what the city proposes and their rational for doing so before working out our next step. The only thing I will say is that the corner of 19th/44th gets very flooded during heavy rain, so maybe that has something to do with this proposal?
Steve,
The city told me they have a flow rate study that shows stormwater runoff rates for the area, but wouldn't share it with me. City engineer Bo Spurrier said he first wanted to give it to the new engineer hired Jan. 31. That seems strange to me, if only because it was a taxpayer funded study and should as a matter of law be made available to the public. Not wanting to pick a fight with Bo, however, I said fair enough. I hope to get a copy before too long and post it here.
Perhaps the flow rate study will shed some light on the need for more stormwater runoff controls, but it seems unlikely to me that the only solution is a large new pond at 19th and 43rd. At least some of the existing ponds in Hiawatha Golf Course serve as a stormwater reservoir, and it's my understanding that part of the Hiawatha Blue Water project would include replumbing some of the ponds to take more water.
But, as you said, we need more information.
This morning, as I got ready for work, someone was out on the green space playing with their dog. And it was 1 degree above zero!
Rgds,
Matt
Matt -- thanks for bringing this to my attention. My kids and I have used that open field at 43rd St. and 19th/20th Ave. for years...playing catch, football, frisbee, etc. And so many other residents in this neighborhood enjoy that field as well.
Instead, the city should use a nearby section of the golf course for building another drainage pond, as they did about eight years ago when the other ponds in this area were added. And I bet golfers wouldn't mind a water hazard along the fairway to make the course a little more challenging.
